2020 Maui Invitational moving to Asheville, North Carolina, because of coronavirus pandemic

The 2020 Maui Invitational is moving to North Carolina, the tournament announced Friday.

It will be held at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina, with sources telling ESPN’s Jeff Borzello the event will take place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The field is still expected to include Alabama, Davidson, Indiana, North Carolina, Providence, Stanford, Texas and UNLV.

An official announcement is expected soon.

The Maui Invitational is normally held in Hawaii the Monday through Wednesday before Thanksgiving. It was relocated this year because of the coronavirus pandemic and rescheduled due to the NCAA deciding to start the season on Nov. 25.

The tournament will be hosted at the Cherokee Center’s ExploreAsheville.com Arena, where the Southern Conference tournament was played in March.

“We’re a tourism-based community, we fit that vibe of what an early-season tournament would look like,” Harrah’s Cherokee Center general manager Chris Corl told ESPN last week. “Our goal is to bring business to town. As long as we can cover costs, we’ll do whatever it takes.”
