Embattled Egerton University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Rose Mwonya has maintained that she is still the substantive office holder despite the council appointment of an active VC.
In a notice to staff and students, Mwonya said that the appointment of Prof Isaac Kibwoge in an acting capacity was null and void.
“I wish to inform staff, students and members of the public that I am still the substantive Vice Chancellor of Egerton University until further notice,” said Mwonya.
The staff on Wednesday afternoon barricaded her office in protest against a court order by the Nakuru Labour and Employment Relations court reinstating her pending hearing and determination of a case against the council’s decision.
“This notice overrides the earlier notice dated November 20, 2020 on the appointment of an acting vice chancellor,” said Mwonya.
Her official vehicle had been withdrawn after she declined to hand over the office to Prof Kibwoge who is the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Planning and development.
While stamping her authority, Mwonya, wrote to the transport department directing them to avail the official vehicle back to her.
The vehicle was, however, not immediately available and the department had to reassign a different Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) from the Research department for her use.
The case between Mwonya and the university council is set to be heard on December 10.
