Kamukunji Police Station OCS Shamir Yunis has been given two weeks to arrest a Ugandan suspect who escaped from the police cell where he was being detained.
The suspect, Martin Wasike, was last week charged – alongside two other suspects – with the offence of kidnapping a police officer.
Mr. Yunis, appearing before a Nairobi court on Tuesday, said the suspect mysteriously disappeared from police custody on the morning of May 14 this year.
He added that the case Investigating Officer had since sent a notice to other police stations to assist in arresting the escapee, adding that an inquiry had also been launched.
He further asked the court for more time to produce the suspect saying “man is to error, that’s a fact of life. One of us must have erred and if it was deliberate then the institution is dealing with the issue, we are asking the court so that we see if the resorts we’ve put in place bear fruits.”
Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, in his ruling, urged the OCS to move with speed and apprehend the suspect since the whereabouts of the kidnapped police officer still remain unknown.
The court on Monday heard that Wasike, Shariff Wanabwa and Phoebe Anindo allegedly committed the crime on January 19, 2020.
The prosecution has lined up around 10 witnesses to testify in the case.
