Dialogue Committee Wants Increase In Presidential Petition Timelines, Evaluation Of 2022 Elections

The National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) established in August 2023 to iron out thorny issues between the ruling Kenya Kwanza and the opposition Azimio la Umoja coalitions has finally tabled its report.

In the report released on Saturday evening, the committee has, among others, recommended an increase in presidential petition timelines, and the evaluation of the 2022 elections.

NADCO recommends the increase of timelines within which the Supreme Court shall hear and determine a petition challenging the validity of a presidential election from 14 to 21 days.

Also, the committee has recommended the evaluation of the 2022 electoral process, and that legal reforms passed less than 18 months to the general elections become effective in the next electoral cycle.

Further, NADCO recommends the entrenchment of NG-CDF, the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), and the Senate Oversight Fund into the constitution.

The committee also recommends the Ward Development Fund be established by statute.

The report has been submitted to Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja leadership, and also presented to parliament for further review.

NADCO was led by Kenya Kwanza’s Kimani Ichung’wah and Azimio’s Kalonzo Musyoka.

Members of the committee include Opiyo Wandayi, Eugene Wamalwa, Okon’go Omogeni and Amina Mnyazi.

Others include Araon Cheruiyot, Cecily Mbarire, Hassan Omar and Catherine Wambilianga.
