Family parades coffin on donkey back to raise Ksh.1.3M funeral fee for kin who died in January

A family in Nyeri has resorted to parading an empty coffin on donkey back in the streets of Nyeri town hoping to raise enough money to bury their kin.

The deceased, Citizen Digital understands, died over a month ago but has not been interred owing to a huge medical bill he had accrued before his demise.

The family of Robert Mbaoni has been unable to raise the needed Ksh.1.3M even after several harambees and appeals to well-wishers.

Margaret Wanjiru, a daughter of the deceased broke down in tears while trying to explain the pain they have been going through as a family.

Another family member said they would be happier seeing a grave at home, than waking up to the horror of the accumulating morgue bills.

Efforts to negotiate with the hospital were unsuccessful as the Ksh.300,000 they raised through a fundraiser and the Ksh. 159,000 paid by NHIF was not enough to offset the bill.,

According to Patrick Mwangi who has been leading the funeral committee, burial plans were halted after they failed to raise the money to bury the dead in January and only resumed last week .

Neighbours and friends walked around town carrying small boxes for the shocked residents of Nyeri town to offer their contribution towards the funeral plans.

According to the organizers, they will bury Mbaoni as soon as they raise the money.
