Gor Mahia FC scored twice in a stoppage time blitz to overcome Rwandan giants APR FC 4-3 on aggregate and advance to the next round of the CAF Champions League qualification stage on Saturday.
Gor lost 2-1 in the first leg away in Kigali last weekend and needed at least a 1-0 win to proceed on away goals rule and their 3-1 victory on the day did just enough to steer the Kenyan champions through.
After leading 1-0 through the opening 80 minutes, Gor were pegged back when substitute Keddy Nsanzimfura scored with a snappy long range effort that caught goalkeeper Gad Matthews off guard.
But Syndey Otieno restored Gor’s lead with a headed effort in stoppage time and fellow substitute Nicholas Kipkirui ensured the match would not be decided in a penalty shootout when he headed home from a corner.
Gor had needed to keep a clean sheet to make their job easier but dug themselves into potential trouble early on, conceding a penalty after defender Andrew Juma committed a foul inside the box.
And Jacques Tuyisenge had the opportunity to put his side in an early lead from the spot but Matthews went the right way to keep out the former Gor player’s effort.
Gor took the lead after Samuel Onyango’s a scrappy effort crept into the back of the net and that lead should have been doubled moments later when Tito Okello raced clear on the left flanks only to shoot straight into goalkeeper Umar Ndayisenga’s arms.
Nsanzimfura made it 1-1 with just under 10 minutes to go leaving Gor in danger of an early exit from the competition only for Otieno and Kipkirui to save the day deep in stoppage time.
