Gospel singer Ruth Matete questioned by DCI over husband’s death

Gospel singer Ruth Matete was on April 16 questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offfices over circumstances in which her Nigerian husband John Apewajoye alias Beloved John died following a fire at their Great Wall Gardens Estate home.

Matete recorded a statement with detectives detailing the incident said to have been caused by a gas cylinder that exploded and gravely injured Apewajoye. She was also reportedly grilled on the deceased’s subsequent hospitalization at Bellevue South Hospital and transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Announcing on Facebook that her husband of five months was no more, the former Tusker Project Fame 5 winner pleaded for prayers before deactivating all her social media pages days later.

“My husband Beloved John Apewajoye has gone to be with the lord… I humbly ask for your prayers during this difficult time,” wrote Matete.

“Words fail me my sister #RuthMatete this is a tough one. My sincere heartfelt condolences for losing your husband #BelovedJohnApewajoye just a few months after your wedding. May God comfort and give you peace darling. Pole sana,” responded fellow singer Evelyne Wanjiru.

While Kambua added: “What do you say? No words are enough to comfort you @ruth_matete. May the God of all comfort, in His own infinite power carry you. May He catch and wipe your tears. May He lift your head and may your beloved Rest in eternal peace.”

In a twist, however, Apewajoye’s body is being held by the Nigerian embassy at KNH awaiting postmortem after a Nigerian friend raised queries as to how the preacher and worship leader met his death. Claiming to be Apewajoye’s manager, the Nigerian – Jesse Ekonaze in a 17-minute video, alleged that the two were having marital problems and demanded a probe.

Apewajoye and Matete met and dated for over two years before they wedded at an exclusive ceremony in November 2019. They were expecting their first child together.

He had previously been married to Juliet Aihinomo Idehen; a union that came to the spotlight after their November 2 wedding.

According to some quarters, Apewajoye was still legally married to Idehen – a position Ruth and the deceased vehemently denied as they pleaded for privacy weeks into their marriage.

“Tell her to provide proof they are still married. I am aware that John is her ex-husband but they are not married anymore. I know the children because they are my husband’s kids,” she told Word Is.

Echoing the message via Instagram, Apewajoye on his part said, “I also want to thank everyone who is busy seeking to destroy,” he continued. “In everything we give thanks to God. We made a vow to God and regardless of what comes our way we will keep this vow.”
