Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru stood her ground during a Citizen TV interview on Monday, April 27, after the host seemingly veered off-script.
During the interview, Waiguru snapped after the host, Sam Gituku, began asking political questions yet she stated that she had been invited on Day Break to discuss her county’s preparedness on tackling the Covid-19 outbreak.
It all began when the host asked about an Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigation that some Ksh50 million had been misappropriated at the county offices, a claim Waiguru quickly shut down.
The interview also wandered into the impeachment attempts against her before the Kirinyaga governor categorically asked the host to focus on the subject of the interview.
“We are now discussing issues of hostilities, innuendos, we are now pushing an agenda and I am not very sure what you are trying to achieve,” she added before moving on to reveal how her county was making a breakthrough in the production of face masks.
In the EACC saga, reports had emerged that the agency was onto her and other officials over a Ksh50 million irregular tender payments.
In her response, the county boss explained that the figure did not originate from the EACC but was created by the county assembly.
“No, that is not what the EACC said. Please do not misquote the EACC. The EACC did not say that any money has been misappropriated. Please, Sam, be very careful not to be used for political reasons and do not misquote the EACC.
“They have not raised an alarm, let me be clear because you are getting your conversation either from social media or a newspaper report…It was not the EACC, it was the county assembly and from where I sit, I invite independent institutions such as the EACC to look into this matter,” she stated.
After the exchange, the two reverted to discussing Covid-19. The governor disclosed that she had distributed over 700 tanks and that she had set up a production unit that was producing a thousand masks a day.
