Mürren lies at the foot of the Schilthorn whose panoramic restaurant provided the stunning location for the 1960’s James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Some of the cast stayed at the Hotel Eiger during the filming and of course, there’s a 007 suite named after the famous spy.
The hotel opened in 1892 and has been in the same family for four generations. Many additions and renovations have brought it bang up-to-date with an impressive indoor heated swimming pool offering mountain views as you put in the lengths. There’s also a lovely terrace with the most amazing alpine views.
Who for
You’re right in the heart of the Jungfrau here, so the hotel makes a comfortable base for enjoying fresh air, taking walks long and short and luxuriating in the wellness facilities, all recharging your batteries with pure alpine energy. The village is car-free so you’re guaranteed peace and quiet.
Accommodation
Forty rooms and 10 suites offer understated elegance and, as well as the usual facilities,
you get robes and slippers plus L’Occitane toiletries. All rooms are provided with a flask of mountain spring water and suites also have Nespresso machines.
Facilities
The morning sunlight illuminates the indoor swimming pool through an enormous wall of glass and you can sit in the Jacuzzi gazing at the snow-capped mountains. The Spa has a sauna, samarium and solarium and offers an extensive massage programme. There’s also a fully equipped gym.
For meetings, there are two seminar rooms, furnished with technical equipment for presentations and banquets for up to 130 can be organised in the Eiger panoramic restaurant.
Food and drink
The Eiger Saal is the main restaurant with tremendous mountain views. Food is locally sourced and inventive, drawing on Swiss and Italian traditions. If you’re taking half board, dinners run to four or five courses with attentive service. A homely touch is that either Susanna or Adrian, the hotel’s owners, make the round of tables every night, enquiring about the food and your stay.
Breakfast is a copious buffet with fresh croissants, Swiss muesli, mountain cheese, bacon and eggs, salmon, yoghurt and a glass of prosecco – a great alpine start for your day.
The Eiger Stübli is an intimate space serving a choice of the best wines and local dishes.
The Tächi Bar adjoins the Eiger Saal and there’s a lounge and outdoor terrace to enjoy afternoon tea and sundowners.
