Like many others, I suddenly found myself having a lot more free time due to quarantine. After I exhausted all my chores (cleaning every corner of the home, reorganizing my closet, etc), I succumbed to the ever popular TikTok. I published my first video on March 30th and have since then accumulated 1.4M followers.

My mind was blown! This engagement has literally taken blood, sweat and tears to achieve on Instagram – and even then, it took years to build my following. Before I knew it, I was completely hooked to creating videos and even managed to get the family involved! If this social media craze is still foreign to you but you are ready to take the plunge and try your hand at it, here are some tips on how to create viral TikTok videos.

Find Your Niche

Everyone is on TikTok these days, which means there is a lot of content to be found. Just like any social media platform, you want to evaluate what skills you have that will allow you to stand out from amongst the crowd. For me, I knew my strong suit was fashion and blogging, so I harnessed my knowledge in these categories and let the ideas flow from there.

Luckily, it is a lot easier to go “viral” on TikTok because it is less focused on statistics like amount of followers or percentage of engagement. If your video is impactful, you can bet that it will garner more and more views. This is why a lot of people can start new but wake up after one night with viral TikTok videos, including thousands of views and followers. As long as the content is right, the numbers will follow!

Know Your Audience

Now that you have a few ideas, you should also be sure you are familiar with the platform in and out. Obviously, a big portion of this are the actual users. TikTok generally has a much younger audience than other social media outlets so you should keep this in mind when brainstorming the top of content you will produce. In my case, I knew a good portion of TikTok users would also have Instagram so a valuable video would be Photo Tips and it was a hit!

Creative Direction

A big part of creating viral TikTok videos requires strong creative direction. The nice thing about this though is that you don’t need expensive equipment – just some really good ideas because the app basically takes care of everything else. If you don’t know where to start, try some of the trending challenges or take inspiration from current viral TikTok videos and put your own twist on them. For instance, summer styling tips (here), styling one piece multiple ways (here), or style hacks. You’ll be surprised at what little things you can teach others.

Optimize Your Thumbnail

The thumbnail is what draws a lot of users into actually watching your TikTok video. On this platform, each video will be shown on your page as a GIF so you want to ensure a couple of things. Firstly, select a portion of the video to be the thumbnail so it is visually striking. Secondly, text is crucial here! It can be hard to tell the context of a video through just an image, so ensuing the thumbnail includes text to explain what exactly is going on is so helpful. In my poses TikTok, I made sure the thumbnail stated, “How to Look Instantly Taller”.

Pick the Right Song

Since these are essentially short videos, the audio plays such an important role too! If you are putting together a travel TikTok, you want to make sure the music is fitting! Plus, a lot of songs tend to go viral due to the ever growing amount of dance challenges being created on a daily basis. Pay attention to what is trending and be sure to incorporate those tracks when it is appropriate to grab people’s attention!

Hashtags

Lastly, utilizing your hashtags are another great way to gain exposure to your TikTok videos. Before posting your content, do a little research to determine which ones have a lot of traction. Just like other social media websites, hashtags categorize your content and only helps you in ensuring more people view it.
