IEBC revokes Nyambane’s certificate for lack of degree

The electoral commission has revoked the clearance certificate for Umoja Summit Party presidential aspirant Walter Mong’are alias Nyambane for lack of a university degree.

Mr Chebukati said upon discovery of new information of lack of university degree on the part of Mr Mong’are, “we summoned him to appear before us but he didn’t not honour our summon. I hereby revoke the nomination of Walter Mongare dated June 2”.

The revocation of Mr Mong’are’s nomination certificate followed a protest by Safina Party presidential aspirant Jimi Wanjigi who was rejected by IEBC for lack of a university degree.

Mr Wanjigi sought to know why the Umoja Summit Party leader was cleared last week yet he also had the same academic issues.

However, addressing a press conference later in the evening, Mr Chebukati said Mr Mong’are’s clearance was done on limited information regarding his academic qualifications but when the IEBC was seized of new information, they moved swiftly to omit him from the list of cleared presidential candidates for lack of a university degree.

However, he said Mr Mong’are met all other requirements.

Mr Mong’are had been cleared last week on June 2 as the first presidential candidate.

“Upon discovery of new information of lack of university degree on the part of Walter Mong’are, we invited him to appear before us but he didn’t honour our invitation. I hereby revoke the nomination of Walter Mongare dated June 2 pursuant to regulation 42(2)(c) of general elections 2022,” he said.

Nonetheless, Mr Chebukati said the revocation is not strange as it happens all the time across the country.

“This is not the first time a candidate’s papers have been recalled. This happens all the time across the country.”

He at the same time said only four candidates have been cleared to run for president: David Mwaure, George Wajackoyah, Raila Odinga and William Ruto.
