Roy ‘Gramps’ Morgan, a member of the Grammy Award-winning reggae band ‘Morgan Heritage,’ has opened up about his journey after receiving his first solo Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album Of The Year.
Gramps Morgan’s third solo album, ‘Positive Vibration,’ was released in July 2021.
The reggae artist expressed his delight at being nominated for the 2022 Grammy Awards on Citizen TV’s 10 over 10 show on Friday..
“I cried for three hours. We were nominated twice with Morgan Heritage and we won with Strictly Roots album in 2016. To now be nominated as a solo artist, I am happy because it shows some of my best work. The pandemic humbled us. Things were moving slower and I therefore had time to work on my music, having learnt that we can actually survive with less.”
Peter “Peetah” Morgan, Una Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan, who followed in the footsteps of their father Denroy Morgan, became part of the Morgan Heritage..
Gramps later went on to have a successful solo career.
Gramps told Willis Raburu that as a group, they struggled at first to pursue solo careers, but eventually got into it, and Gramps released his debut solo album, ‘2 Sides of My Heart,’ in 2009..
“As Morgan Heritage, we were very reluctant of pursuing solo careers. Eventually, it ended up happening and we worked on our solo projects. My first solo project is dubbed ‘2 Sides Of My Heart’.
Following the release of his third solo album, ‘Positive Vibration,’ a 15-track effort with a wonderful blend of reggae and country, the musician praised Dohty Family and Kenyan Reggae Deejay Kris Darling for assisting him in promoting the album.
“Dohty Family and Chris Darling are very key to me because the success of my third solo album. It’s a very special time for the album and for me as Grumps Morgan, as a solo artist, to come here and celebrate a Grammy nomination with Kenyans.”
The ‘Wash The Tears’ hit maker proceeded to give a special mention to his Kenyan audience.
“Everywhere we tour around the world, there is always a Kenyan. I was in Japan and I met a Kenyan there. For me, when I see my Kenyan people, it’s something special.”
Gramps Morgan released several solo singles including “Runaway Bay” and “People Like You.” The latter was nominated in 2021 for three International Reggae and World Music Awards, in the categories of Best Song, Best Crossover Song and Best Gospel Song, and won the award for Best Gospel Song.
