The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE) exam results were officially released on Thursday with the candidates registering commendable results despite the challenging period they had to endure due to COVID-19 disruptions.
A total of 1,191,616 candidates had registered for the exam but 12,424 were absent during the examination period due to different circumstances.
Announcing the results, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said no candidate would miss a place in secondary school.
Of the 1,179,192 pupils who sat the KCPE exam a majority of them; 889,011, scored below 300 out of 500 marks.
There were 8,091 candidates who scored over 400 marks with the top candidate attaining 433 marks.
Candidates who attained between 300 — 399 marks were 282,090, those who scored 200 — 299 were 589,027, while between the 100 — 199 mark were 299,677 pupils with 307 others attaining between 1 — 99 marks.
Prof. Magoha pointed out that five papers; English, Composition, Kiswahili Lugha, Kenyan Sign Language Objective, Mathematics and Religious Education recorded an improvement in performance in the year 2020 when compared to 2019.
On the other hand , five other papers, English Language, Kiswahili Insha, Kenyan Sign Language Composition, Science and Social Studies, recorded a drop in performance.
In terms of gender, female candidates performed slightly better than their male counterparts in English, Kiswahili and Kenyan Sign Language.
Male candidates performed slightly better than their female counterparts in Mathematics, Science and Social Studies and Religious Education.
The number of candidates with Special Needs was higher in the year 2020 (2,675) when compared to that of 2019 (2,407), with the top performing pupil scoring 420 marks in the results announced on Thursday.
On the number of irregularities recorded in the KCPE 2020 exam, the Education CS pointed out that five cases of impersonation were detected during the examination process while seven candidates were found in possession of pre-prepared notes in examination rooms.
“In the administration of the 2020 KCPE Examinations, the Government sustained its robust security arrangements through the Multi-Sectoral
Examinations Monitoring Team. These measures ensured that cases of irregularities during the sitting of the examinations, and during the marking
process, were either stamped out or nipped in the bud before they could happen,” said Magoha.
