The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a raft of new directives for the registration of the 2021 KCPE and KCSE examinations candidates.
The examinations body is keen on candidates being registered by end of July, also warning against any double registration.
It’s a race against time by KNEC to rectify the school calendar that was disrupted upon the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic early last year.
The closure of schools had a ripple effect on examination dates for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
For institutions of learning to go back to the normal school calendar by 2023, KNEC has issued new directives that will see the 2021 KCPE and KCSE exams take place in March 2022 and the year’s papers sat in November 2022.
In a circular issued to schools on Thursday, headteachers are required to register Class 7 and Form 3 candidates where they have been learning. The exercise which commenced on June 2, 2021 is scheduled to end on July 31.
KNEC CEO Mercy Karogo in addition warned that double registration amounts to examination malpractice that must be avoided.
The council prevailed on headteachers to ensure that they register the names of their respective candidates in the order that their details appear on their birth certificates, the year of birth, gender, subjects entered and other information on different categories of special needs.
Any school with between 5-14 candidates will be required to be hosted by another examination center to be determined by the sub-county director of education. KNEC will only allow one private examination center per a sub-county.
The government intends to pay for all candidates from public and private schools except for candidates re-sitting their papers, non-citizens, private candidates who register in private exam centers and candidates in prison.
Examiners are setting the national exams with KNEC saying everything is in place to rectify the disruption in the exams calendar.
