Lightning strike injures fans at Tour Championship

ATLANTA — At least five spectators were injured and at least two were unresponsive when lightning struck East Lake Golf Club on Saturday afternoon during a weather delay at the Tour Championship.

Al Holder, a sound technician working the PGA Tour event, reported five ambulances on the scene and three spectators who were being treated by medical personnel in a fan zone area near the 16th hole and a lake on the property.

Lightning struck the top of a tree near the 16th tee and shattered bark all the way to the bottom.

Play in the third round of the event had been halted at 4:17 p.m. ET due to dangerous weather in the area. Players were taken off the course and many spectators left. The incident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Dangerous weather and rain halted play for 80 minutes on Saturday.
