The love relationship between the Nairobi Metropolitan Services and members of the county assembly appears to be coming to an end after minority MCAs demanded accountability on the monies allocated to the entity.
Led by Minority leader Micheal Ogada, the members have accused NMS Director General Maj-Gen Mohammed Badi of laxity.
Ogada says with only two months remaining before the end of the financial year, there is no development in the wards in terms of development.
‘’We gave this entity Ksh. 29billion for development and nothing seems to be working. In our words, the assembly is becoming disillusioned,” he charged.
Despite insisting that they support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s agenda on NMS, Ogada says when Badi came in they were all happy with his performance but confidence in him is now waning.
“Mbadi must be told that Nairobi County is not just the CBD, Nairobi is not just a two or three slums we have, Nairobi has 85 wards and we need to see service delivery in all those wards, we don’t want theatrics, we don’t want drama,” said Ogada.
Ogada, who was speaking during a press conference alongside minority MCAs, further accused the NMS of refusing to account for the funds that were allocated.
“We demand accountability in terms of what we gave to the NMS. They refused to prepare these reports and told us they are accountable to the office of the President. We are telling them if they are accountable to the Office of the President don’t take money from the county,” Ogada retorted.
The NMS took the lion’s share of the allocation to Nairobi County, and was one of the main reasons that led to the impeachment of former Governor Mike Sonko when he refused to sign the budget as prepared by the county assembly.
The issue of who oversights the NMS has remained a thorny one, with both the Senate and the National Assembly conflicted on who will make sure the money being disbursed to the entity is utilized appropriately.
