Man who lived with Tecra Muigai arrested, reports indicate she had head injuries

Police in Lamu have arrested a 50-year-old man said to have been living with the daughter of Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja.

Omar Lali was held following the death of Tecra Muigai on Tuesday at their apartment in Shella on Lamu Island.

The two, according to neighbours, lived as a couple.

Ms Muigai was airlifted to Nairobi after she fell down the stairs. She died on Saturday while being treated. Her family, in a statement, described the incident as tragic even as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations took over the probe.

And on Sunday, Mr Lali was arrested and interrogated as investigations into the woman’s controversial death was taken over by the Homicide Unit of the DCI.

“We have arrested Mr Omar, the man who lived with Tecra before her he reported her fall and subsequent death.

“However, the case is being handled by the DCI. We cannot say much about the matter because investigations are still in the formative stage,” Mr Moses Murithi, the Lamu County police commander, said yesterday.

Sources said Muigai had lived in Lamu for over a month before her death.

Neighbours said Muigai loved partying and was known to live lavishly.

Sources yesterday indicated that she had a swelling in the brain, according to preliminary investigations.

Reports indicated that the swelling was consistent with falling from a raised place or blunt trauma to the skull. Lali was arrested in the apartment where he lived with Muigai.

Residents who know them said they had lived together at a local hotel since March this year before moving into the apartment.

Reports indicated that the woman may have fallen down the stairs due to intoxication.

Lali is said to have been found asleep and drunk when neighbours went to inform him of what had befallen his lover.

Residents, who helped Lali take the unconscious woman to King Fahad Hospital on the island on April 30, said the couple had staggered into the house that night and appeared to have been drinking.

“We have been seeing Tecra in Lamu, but we did not know she is the daughter of Keroche Breweries owners. She loved partying,” said a resident who did not wish to be named.

Other reports indicated that the couple had fallen out and would sometimes be seen quarrelling in public.

The police said they had received reports that Muigai was last seen entering the apartment on April 23.

Neighbours said the two met last year and got into a relationship.

Lali, who works as a boat operator, often ferried Muigai between the islands in the Lamu archipelago.
