Meet Felmas Koranga, Female Basketball Star Putting Kenya On The World Map

Felmas Koranga is not a new name in the basketball scene in Kenya. The US-based athlete who currently plays for the Troy college basketball team has been the subject of conversation in the Sunbelt Conference League.

With several awards to her name, Koronga is aiming for the sky.

“I have scooped the Women Basketball Coaches awards as the Player of the year, Sun Belt Conference newcomer of the year and most recently the Sun Belt Conference player of the week. I believe all these are fruits of hardwork and dedication,” she says.

In 2021 Felmas was part of the Kenya Lionesses team that booked their ticket to a second straight International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Afro-Basket tournament when they defeated favourites Egypt 99-83 in the Zone 5 Qualifiers Final in Kigali, Rwanda.

“Players need to trust in themselves and work hard to improve their skills. However sometimes challenges arise,” she adds.

One such moment for her is when she moved from Tyler Junior College to Troy College to play Basketball.

“I was quite anxious about moving to Troy. I wondered if I was going to fit in,” she says.

A high flying career in college basketball and a promising future in the sport, Felmas has ensured that she still gives equal attention to her school life. She got her first Degree in December 2021 and is currently pursuing her graduate studies in Clinical Mental Health counseling.

She hopes to put her education into use especially in the sporting world. Her accolades aside, one thing is crystal clear, for Felmas Koranga, it is only just the beginning!
