Residents of Nyakwere village in Nyatike, Migori county, are celebrating following the recent discovery of gold deposits in the area.
The residents have since been combing and digging the land in search of the precious mineral.
Mounds of fresh soil and deep holes punctuate the small piece of land – as residents engage in what has become a race for gold.
“It is true that gold deposits have been confirmed in this area. That is why you can see people are already busy digging using crude tools,” Isaac Aruga, a resident of Nyakwere told Wananchi Reporting.
The new spot is not very far from the famous Macalder mines, also in Nyatike, that has existed since the colonial times.
The new discovery has left locals feeling optimistic and hopeful that wealth has finally paid them a visit.
“This discovery is important because this region has over the years depended on gold as the leading economic factor. Our people will no longer have to travel far to work in gold mines,” Aruga.
Other mining spots in the region include Osiri and Matanda, also in Nyatike, Migori County.
According to residents, the gold deposits were discovered next to a large hole that had been dug by a road contractor.
“The large hole is today filled with water, but this will not stop us from digging every inch of that gold,” said Aruga.
The residents have, however, decried the shortage of machines and other necessary equipment to help the extract the mineral.
