The mother of Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns has died due to complications from the coronavirus, the team announced Monday.
Jacqueline Cruz had been diagnosed with COVID-19 last month. Towns said in an emotional Instagram video March 24 that his mother was in a medically induced coma and had been put on a ventilator.
“Jackie was many things to many people – a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend,” the Towns family said in the statement released by the team Monday. “The matriarch of the Towns family, she was an incredible source of strength; a fiery, wring, and extremely loving person, who touched everyone she met. Her passion was palpable and her energy will never be replaced.”
The Towns family also thanked the medical staff who had treated Cruz as well as Towns’ father, Karl Sr., who has recovered from the virus.
