You either loved it or you hated it – but regardless, Emily in Paris has had a viral moment recently. This Netflix series is about a young American marketing career go-getter and her adventures as she moves to Paris for work. Whether or not you were a fan of the storyline, one thing we can probably all agree on is how distinctive her sense of style was. Personally, I was a big fan of her chic, preppy pairings with contemporary, young twists. She was definitely a trendsetter and her valiant efforts in layering different patterns and rocking quirky accessories needs to be recognized. After finishing Season 1, Emily’s sense of style definitely resonated with me and I wanted to share similar outfits so you can achieve the Emily in Paris couture aesthetic.
Colorful Outerwear
Perhaps one of Emily’s most iconic looks was her green Chanel jacket paired with a coordinating plaid skirt, bucket hat and necktie. She even styled it with a pistachio colored bucket bag to maximize the greens. You do not need to run out and purchase a Chanel coat to get this look though! An equally bright green, orange or yellow jacket is a one-stop way to achieve her signature colored outerwear look. You can choose to wear this over a patterned outfit or if you want the outer layer to be the star of the show, keep your look neutral and solid underneath.
Mad for Plaid
Our girl, Emily, has a strong affinity for plaid, houndstooth and checker prints and is seen rocking these iconic patterns in a few different looks. Luckily, this time period and the fall season goes hand-in-hand together. Emily loves a matching set, which is a really effortless way to wear a pattern. You could also look for it in accents or outerwear as another way to incorporate more plaid into your looks as an easy way to wear more of these patterns. As a finishing touch, top your look off with a beret – one of Emily’s favorite hat accessories and an absolute must to achieve that Parisian aesthetic.
Tulle Skirt
At one point in the series, Emily has an evening work event and opts for a gorgeous tulle skirt and strapless top combo. I absolutely love all things tulle for a night out on the town. When it comes to this fabrication, the more dramatic and voluminous – the better! Like Emily, you can layer a tulle skirt separate with a top or a bodycon dress. If you are feeling adventurous, I think tulle also has a place in everyday wear too. Try layering a chunky sweater on top to make it more daytime appropriate!
Romantic Florals
Aside from plaid, it seems Emily’s other go-to pattern to wear is the romantic floral. Maybe it has to do with her environment as Paris is the city of love or maybe she just loves a good flower design. Whatever it may be, it makes sense because this feminine, classic aesthetic fits perfectly with her character and style. Since romantic florals are so girly, I love wearing them on dresses. Channel your inner Emily with all-over floral printed one-pieces, booties and a beret or bucket hat if you are feeling extra Parisian chic!
Bold Pattern Pairing
The reason I thought Emily’s sense of style was admirable was because of her bold choices and risks. I can relate because I feel my outfits are sometimes a little avant garde. One of Emily’s most common fashion risks was mixing multiple loud patterns together in one look. None of these outfits were junky, but rather tasteful and trendsetting. So in order to release your inner Emily, try playing around with different patterns until you find a combo you love. To pull this look off, stick to similar color stories to maintain some synergy between the pieces.
