Ng’ethu water treatment works which serves 85 percent of Nairobi County has been shut down due to heavy rainfall in the Aberdare ranges.
A statement sent out by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) on Friday said the heavy rainfall had caused high turbidity in the raw water due to a suspected landslide upstream.
The temporary shut down of the treatment plant caused water supply interruption in parts of Nairobi on Friday.
Water supply into the city is expected to resume by 6pm on Friday.
The water that Nairobi residents use is channelled to the Ng’ethu plant from Ndakaini Dam which is operated by the Nairobi City Water and Sewarage Company.
The water has usually passed through several channels including Kiama River and Kimakia River whose flows are diverted to Chania River at the Mwagu Outfall.
From Mwagu, it is then channelled to the Mataara chamber from where it is conveyed by pipelines to the Ng’ethu water production plant.
