Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe says the government is concerned over the carefree attitude displayed by some Kenyans even as the number of Covid-19 infections in the country continue to rise by the day.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, the Heath CS said some Kenyans were abusing the recent reopening of restaurants and eateries to drink alcohol.
He pointed out that there are alcohol lovers who have been hopping from one restaurant to another taking “one sausage and two beers” until they have drunk enough.
This comes after the government on April 27 allowed restaurants to sell alcohol only to customers waiting to be served a meal.
“People have been going to pubs or to eateries, they order one sausage and two beers then go to another restaurant and have another sausage and two more beers… go to another and ask for an orange — in the name of a dessert — then take two more beers… Surely? What is that? What are you doing?” posed CS Kagwe.
He, however, maintained that the government does not regret reopening the restaurants, pointing out that it was a decision made to safeguard the livelihoods of those employed in the food joints.
“I do not regret. The idea was an effort by the government that was even announced by the President so that people don’t go hungry..,” he said. “Whether we will roll back and close them is an option that is on the table. But we are trying as much as we can to ensure that is not what we do if we can get people behaving.
“We will escalate or deescalate measures in accordance with the behaviour that we observe. These interventions were supposed to secure some form of livelihood for some people even and it is true that these measures have been abused….,” added Kagwe.
