Police detain man in connection with brutal killing of lover in Dunga Estate

Police have detained a man over the brutal killing of a woman he had an affair with.

Erick Okoth was arrested after presenting himself to Kisumu Central police station where he went to record a statement about the incident.

According to the police, Mercy Akinyi, a mother of one died after she was allegedly attacked by sons of Okoth over claims that she had an illicit affair with their father.

And yesterday, tables turned on Okoth when he went to record a statement about the incident after officers pounced on him and detained him.

Kisumu Central Sub-County OCPD Martha Ng’etich told Sunday Standard that the man was arrested to help unravel the mystery surrounding the murder.

“We are holding him to help as we continue with probe on the whereabouts of his sons,” Ms Ng’etich said.

The incident took place on Wednesday night in Dunga Estate.

The sons are said to have been angered by their father’s move to take in another woman home as their mother lay sick in a Kisumu hospital.

Witnesses said the suspects accused their father of not visiting their mother, who is in ICU, and instead spending more time with Akinyi.

On the night of the attack, neighbours said the father was heard pleading with unknown people not to attack a woman, telling them she was “their younger mother”.

She was later rushed to Kisumu County Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Akinyi is reported to have struggled with her assailants to the ground who attacked her with machetes and stones.

Ms Ng’etich said locking up of the man would help in tracing his sons who are suspects in the murder.

Okoth will stay in custody for 14 days as investigations are being carried out.
