Raphael Tuju has been appointed the executive director of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya party secretariat, Raila Odinga presidential campaign press announced on Wednesday April 6.
The former Jubilee party secretary general will coordinate member parties and head strategy and program functions in the secretariat.
“He will lead the strategic and program teams that will work to ensure Azimio victory in the August elections,” Mr Odinga’s spokesperson Dennis Onyango said in a statement to newsrooms.
He said Mr Tuju has decades of experience in politics and governance, having served as Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and Jubilee Party Secretary General.
The Azimio Coalition party brings together more than 20 political parties including the ruling Jubilee led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Mr Odinga’s ODM and the Kalonzo Musyoka-led Wiper.
“…the over 20 political parties have diverse regional strengths, opinions and a myriad of leadership that represent the face of Kenya,” the statement reads in part.
Mr Tuju resigned as Jubilee Secretary General and Cabinet Secretary without portfolio to venture into active politics.
He had announced that he would seek elective seat either in his Siaya backyard or in Nairobi, but until his appointment, the former Rarieda MP had not announced his next move.
He was mulling vying for either Rarieda or Lang’ata MP seat, or join the Siaya gubernatorial or senatorial races.
On Tuesday, Mr Musyoka also indicated that Mr Tuju had been nominated to map the way on zoning to avoid sibling rivalry by Azimio member parties.
“We have nominated Raphael Tuju to sit as chair and he will be assisted by political parties’ secretary generals,” said Mr Musyoka.
