A video of a woman in labour on the road right outside Pumwani Maternity Hospital has elicited anger among netizens, who expressed their displeasure with the government and hospital management under the hashtag #RespectOurMothers.
In the undated video, the woman who’s visibly in labour is seen sitting on the tarmac outside the hospital as well-wishers scramble to cover her with lesos. Irate residents are heard insulting the hospital for allegedly turning away the woman, despite her condition. Netizens vented their anger through the hashtag which is the same one used to protest against Emurua Dikirr MP Johanna Ngeno’s utterances on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his mother.
Netizens called out politicians who held demonstrations defending mothers for failing to speak out in light of the footage. Others bashed senators for the delay in passing the counties revenue formula which led to a shutdown of some essential county services. Here are some reactions.
The double speak and silence from the same leaders is evident as during the Ngeno incidence they turned into keyboard warriors on social media before they went into the streets to protest and so far none has had a chance to comment. It is worth noting that the issue of respect for all came up during the Newsgang episode on Citizen TV when presenter Yvonne Okwara challenged all to respect all mothers.
That wasn't a mother giving birth outside Pumwani hospital. #RespectOurMothers indeed.
