Simone Biles withdraws from vault, uneven bars at Summer Olympics; status for last two individual events to be determined

Simone Biles has withdrawn from the individual finals for vault and uneven bars at the Summer Olympics and her status for floor exercise and balance beam will be determined in the coming days, USA Gymnastics said Friday night.

Biles had qualified to compete in the vault and uneven bars Sunday. The floor exercise is set for Monday and beam Tuesday.

Earlier this week, Biles withdrew from Thursday’s individual all-round competition to focus on her mental health. American Sunisa Lee won gold in that event. The decision came after she also withdrew from the team final after one rotation on vault. The U.S. women won silver there.

In its statement, USA Gymnastics said MyKayla Skinner, who had the fourth highest score in vault during qualifications, will compete in vault finals for the U.S. alongside Jade Carey, who finished with the second highest score.

Biles was the defending Olympic champion in the vault.

“We remain in awe of Simone, who continues to handle this situation with courage and grace, and all of the athletes who have stepped up during these unexpected circumstances,” USA Gymnastics said.
