Sofapaka 3-1 Gor Mahia: K’Ogalo keep top spot despite loss

Promise Chinoso was the shining star as he scored a brace to put a break on the Green Army’s dominance in this fixture

Sofapaka handed Gor Mahia a third Kenyan Premier League (KPL) loss of the season in a 3-1 win at Narok Stadium on Sunday.

Promise Chinoso scored twice and Sebastiene Ikekhai scored the third one while the champions got their only goal from Samuel Onyango’s strike.

It only took Sofapaka some seconds to shock Gor Mahia with an early opener when Chinoso’s header beat goalkeeper Robert Mapigano who had hardly settled in his area.

Richard Aimo was lucky not to concede in the ninth minute when he dilly-dallied with the ball and invited Onyango to close in on him. The goalkeeper released the ball only to direct it to Juma Balinya’s path and the Gor Mahia’s forward shot hit the post for Richard Aimo to recollect the rebound and ease the pressure.

K’Ogalo equalised after a quarter an hour when Onyango headed Kenneth Muguna’s corner into the bottom corner. Both Aimo and his defenders all looked immobile as the former Ulinzi Stars forward rose and planted the ball into the net.

Dangerous-looking Onyango was denied by Aimo in the 22nd minute after the former chested down a cross from Clifton Miheso and tried to find the bottom right-hand corner only for the outstretched goalkeeper to parry the ball out for a fruitless Gor Mahia corner.

The former Chemelil Sugar goalkeeper frustrated Onyango once more in the 41st minute when he successfully blocked him after a one-on-one situation.

Onyango had been put through on goal by Boniface Omondi but the custodian did not allow him to have a full view of the goal thereby denying him a chance to get a brace.

Charles Momanyi saved the day for Gor Mahia in the 44th minute as he made a goalline clearance after Brian Kayanja’s shot was bound to cross into the net.

Mapigano had moved off his line in an attempt to clear the ball but he did not and invited Sofapaka to attack, but Momanyi was at hand to save them from more blushes.

Chinoso’s header beat Mapigano again as the 2009 KPL champions regained lead and earned himself a brace in the 55th minute. Chinoso headed in a corner delivered by Ellie Asieche as Batoto ba Mungu looked assertive.

Sofapaka stretched their lead further in the 86th minute when Ikekhai managed to find the top corner with a powerful shot from outside the box.

Gor Mahia had defeated Sofapaka in the last four consecutive matches and looked a pale shadow of their previous selves against their rivals. They will remain top, though, with 44 points, three more than second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz.
