Source — Jason Garrett agrees to become new Giants OC

Jason Garrett has agreed to become the new offensive coordinator of the New York Giants, a source told ESPN’s Ed Werder.

Garrett will stay in the NFC East, just weeks after he was not retained by the Dallas Cowboys, where he was head coach for nine seasons.

Garrett had interviewed with the Giants and new coach Joe Judge on Wednesday. The Giants had requested permission to speak with him because he technically was still under contract with Dallas.

The 53-year-old Garrett has ties to the Giants organization, having played there from 2000 to 2003, and he is well-respected inside their building.

At Judge’s introductory news conference earlier this month, Giants co-owner John Mara was asked about the possibility of hiring Garrett to this role.

“I certainly wouldn’t have any objection to that,” Mara said. “I have a lot of respect for Jason. At the end of the day, that’s going to be Joe’s decision.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter wasn’t surprised that Joe Judge landed the Giants job. He breaks down the coaching search, the Matt Rhule situation and what to expect in the draft with Giants reporter Jordan Raanan. Listen now!

Garrett’s experience as a head coach could serve as an asset to Judge, who has never been a head coach at any level. Judge spent the past eight seasons as an assistant under Bill Belichick in New England, most recently as the special-teams coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Garrett will inherit an offense that turned to rookie quarterback Daniel Jones this past season, and has star running back Saquon Barkley in the backfield.

Garrett has experience working with young QBs. He was a key figure in the development of current Cowboys starter Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick in 2016. Prescott finished fourth in the NFL with a QBR of 70.1 this season.

Jones, the No. 6 draft pick out of Duke last year, had his ups and downs throughout his rookie season. He threw 24 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions and also lost 11 fumbles.

Information from ESPN’s Jordan Raanan was used in this report.
