Suns fire coach Kokoskov after 1 season

The Phoenix Suns have fired coach Igor Kokoskov less than a year after hiring him, league sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Kokoskov, a Serbia native who was the first head coach born and raised outside North America in NBA history, was hired by the Suns on May 2 of last year to help guide the rebuilding Suns. He was an assistant coach of the Utah Jazz at the time of his hire.

One factor playing into the Suns’ move was their plan to target Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams, league sources told Wojnarowski.

Williams has also been a candidate to fill the head coaching vacancy of the Lakers, who are planning a second interview with Williams soon, sources said.
