Temporary reprieve for Ledama Ole Kina in fight over powerful Senate committee seat

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina got a temporary reprieve after the High Court barred removal or nomination of the chairman of a powerful Senate team.

The High Court certified as urgent the matter involving election of Chair of the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC).

The committee is tasked with oversight of the expenditure of billions of shillings given to all 47 counties under the Division of Revenue and other conditional grants.

There has been a standoff over control of the Committee Chair position following the election of Ole Kina as CPAIC chair.

He had garnered five votes against his rival Sam Ongeri (Kisii Senator) who got 4 votes.

However, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) expressed “dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the elections.”

“We intend to withdraw our membership from the said committee until an appropriate resolution can be made,” Senator James Orengo said.

A tough-talking Ole Kina however dismissed the move and defiantly went on to chair several meetings as CPAIC chair.

Today I chaired my second meeting as the duly elected Chair of Senate Public Accounts Investment Committee. The letter by James Orengo has got no basis and must be treated with contempt! Because this committee is very powerful they want a push over not Me,” he said on Twitter

On Monday, Justice Weldon Korir said that the case will be mentioned on May 14 for further direction.
