Being more conscious as a consumer is something I am definitely trying to improve upon. Admittedly, I think we could all say we have blindly put products into our cart without really checking who the company is and what they stand for. One area in which I am really focusing on is what I keep stocked in my vanity.
We’re constantly inundated with a plethora of beauty brands so it can be hard to discern the good from the bad. Plus, many companies are making “special” claims, using popular buzzwords. And in a pretty unregulated industry, you really don’t know who’s telling the truth. In today’s blog post, I wanted to dissect the difference between clean, organic, and natural beauty and what brands I recommend for each.
Clean Beauty
Let us start off with defining what Clean Beauty is. These are products that heavily focus on all the different components that go into it. In order to be considered “clean”, the product in question needs to be free of any toxic ingredients that could potentially cause negative short and long term health effects. This genre of beauty products is important because we ensure that we are putting onto our skin is not going to be a choice we regret in the long run. Our bodies deserve nothing but the best.
Ingredients to Avoid
So what exactly is inside beauty products that we are avidly trying to avoid? Ingredients like parabens, synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde, talc, BHA/BHT, aluminum, benzophenone and many more. All of these products may assist in resolving short-term solutions, but in the end, they could potentially damage or worsen your skin condition. Going hand-in-hand with non-toxic ingredients, is the necessity for transparent labels. Clean beauty brands should clearly list all components of the product so the consumer knows exactly what he or she is purchasing.
Clean Beauty Brands
If you are looking for mean and clean, Volition Beauty, Tatcha, and Glow Recipe. Every product is certified clean and free of parabens and sulfates. Plus, they are also cruelty-free which is always a plus! I absolutely love Volition Beauty’s Prismatic Luminizing Shield because it’s a non-greasy sunscreen that is perfect for everyday protection. If you are in the market for some hydration boosting products, Glow Recipe and Tatcha both have a plethora of options made from clean ingredients.
Organic Beauty
This next classification simply means that beauty products are made from organically farmed ingredients. Oftentimes, clean and organic beauty tends to converge. Components in these types of beauty elixirs are not from any GMO raised crops or crops with herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. Organic beauty allows the user to rest easy because he or she knows every ingredient gone into it is safe and untouched by chemicals.
Why is Organic Important?
Truth be told, organic beauty products do not automatically make them more effective compared to their typical counterparts. However, there is most certainly merit in buying organic. Firstly, it is better for the environment because you are not supporting farms that spray chemicals all over their fields. This can produce things like pesticide infused runoff that gets dumped into our water supplies. Secondly, I recommend organic beauty for people with more sensitive skin because you know there are no harsh chemicals.
Organic Beauty Brands
Unlike the food industry, the beauty market is not regulated as strictly, thus some companies abuse the system and can throw around terms like “organic” on their packaging. So you need to be wary if you intend on shopping for organic beauty. Juice Beauty, Tata Harper, and Coola offers clinically validated, authentically organic products. I also love Indie Lee for their natural and clean skincare products like their body butter that is divine to apply after a shower. I also just started using Terres D’Afrique – and it’s seriously like superfood for the skin!
Natural Beauty
Lastly, this umbrella of beauty products is the least regulated and is one that you should be more careful with. That’s not to say there aren’t great natural beauty brands out there though. Natural beauty products should use only plants, botanical extracts, and minerals, which are better for your skin and health.
Ingredients That Matter
Brands that claim to be natural can be authentic. In fact, many of them use aloe, coconut oil, green tea, shea butter, beeswax, and essential oils are all examples of natural ingredients that offer great benefits for hair and skin even if they’re not organic certified.
Natural Beauty Brands
The first green beauty brand that comes to mind is Herbivore. They produce high-quality, plant-based skincare products that are also cruelty free! Plus their ultra fun and cheeky packaging is always a beauty to look at. The Coco Rose Body Polish is a gentle exfoliator that keeps the skin smooth and moisturized. I’ve been wanting to try the newly launched Prism Glow, a rinse-off exfoliating mask. Another brand whose products are clean and derived from resources that are completely traceable is Dr. Barbara Sturm. It’s expensive but worth every penny!
