Review of Africans in Europe
Ismaila Sarr inspired Watford to a deserved success over hapless Norwich City on Saturday, and Djene had a game to forget in Getafe’s thrashing at Rayo Vallecano.
Too Good: Mane, Salah & Keita
All three Africans netted in a hard-fought 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, a result even Jurgen Klopp admitted was slightly flattering.
Fresh from scoring his 100th strike last week, Mohamed Salah netted yet again against the Eagles to take edge ever closer to Africa’s top Premier League scorer Didier Drogba.
Sadio Mane’s close-range strike was his 100th for Liverpool and is now up to 98 PL strikes following his third league goal in five appearances so far. The Senegal star has now netted in his last nine appearances against the Eagles.
Naby Keita saved the best for last with a left-footed volley in the closing minutes, ending a run without a goal in 14 months and matched the strike with an unmoved celebration.
The Reds sit joint-top of the standings after five games.
Too Bad: Djene
Djene had a tough afternoon at Rayo Vallecano as Getafe suffered a 3-0 defeat in Madrid.
The centre-back conceded an eighth-minute penalty and never seemed to recover for the rest of the game, although he notable won five of six aerial duels.
Getafe have now fallen to five straight defeats and sit 19th in La Liga, scoring once and conceding eight times.
Too Good: Sebastien Haller
The Ajax frontman’s week ended on a positive note with a goal in the Dutch giants’ 9-0 obliteration of Cambuur on Saturday.
Haller is now up to five league goals, nobody in the Eredivisie has scored more, and Erik ten Hag’s team replaced PSV atop the standings after the latter’s 4-0 home thrashing against Feyenoord.
Noussair Mazraoui netted one of Ajax’s goals to continue his fine start to the campaign in which he’s already contributed to four goals from right-back.
Too Bad: Mame Thiam
Kayserispor were beaten 2-1 by high-flying Hatayspor despite scoring first.
Thiam didn’t play well for the entirety of the match, often losing possession and unable to make any significant impact in the final third for the visitors.
The Senegal mam completed one of his attempted three dribbles and won a paltry three duels from 14, further emphasising his underwhelming showing.
Kayserispor’s defeat was the away side’s first loss in four Super Lig matches.
Too Good: Ismaila Sarr
Watford picked up their second Premier League victory of the season and first since the opening day with a comprehensive 3-1 hammering of fellow new boys Norwich City.
Sarr netted the game-winning strike and added another with 10 minutes remaining, taking his league tally to three strikes.
The deserved victory was Watford’s fifth straight win over Norwich in domestic football.
