Wanjiru, Karanja punch their way to gold in Kinshasa

Lightweight Teresia Wanjiru won the first gold medal for Kenya at the ongoing Africa Zone III Boxing Championships going on in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Elizabeth Akinyi (middleweight) lost her final bout to settle for silver while David Karanja won Kenya’s second gold with a 3-2 points win over DRC’s Bakora Kalongo.

Wanjiru edged out home boxer Raissa Djofa to claim gold  on Friday night.

Wanjiru’s victory came moments after defending champion Elly Ajowi settled for bronze in super heavyweight after he lost to home boxer Umaga Bakola in the semi-finals.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Christine Ongare had earlier on led more Kenyan boxers to reach the final.

Also to cruise through to the final on Friday were Shaffi Bakari in bantamweight and Samuel Njau in featherweight.

Ongare, who won bronze last year, beat DRC’s Clarke Tambwe in light flyweight 5-0, Bakari edged out Zivenne Nguina from Congo Brazzaville 5-0 while Njau stopped Nakova Yocka also from Congo Brazzaville.
