As much as I love summer, I have to admit that it’s one of the seasons that’s trickiest to dress for. You don’t have the luxury of layers and textures like you do during the colder seasons. And honestly, I just want to wear the bare minimum most days given the heat and humidity. That’s why it’s some times easier to just stick to wardrobe staples that make getting dressed a breeze. That said, I figured I’d share the basic wardrobe upgrades that will see you through the end of the year right now.
1. Long Shorts
I used to think summer was all about denim cutoffs, but I’ll trading in my denim shorts for long, tailored shorts. The beauty of bermuda shorts is that they can be worn anywhere – including the office. I also love how chic they look with kitten heels and a blazer. You can easily make them more casual too with sporty sandals and a muscle tee.
2. Ribbed Basics
Whether you’ll be WFH for the rest of summer or commuting in the summer heat, there is nothing more versatile than ribbed basics this season. From skirts to tank tops and cardigans, your pairings are infinite. Ribbed textures look more expensive and luxe than jersey and cotton – and they’re great for teaming with denim for a cool, casual look.
3. Tank Dress
One of the most basic wardrobe upgrades you can make right now is a tank top dress. They’re chic, sophisticated, and flattering on any body type. I love that you can dress them up with heels or down with sneakers and it always works. Grab one of my picks below and I bet you’ll be wearing it all summer long.
4. Pleats
I’m also favoring pin-tucked details and pleats this season – especially on shorts and trousers. It’s another one of those pieces that you can take from day to night or work to weekend. The soft-tailored silhouette makes any casual summer outfit feel more elevated.
5. The Dad Shirt
If you love the effortlessly chic vibe of a button down shirt, then give yours an update by trying a dad shirt. You can style them with practically any bottom from jeans to paperbag shorts – or even wear it as a swim coverup. You can also try my various styling tricks on TikTok for more ways on how to wear the dad shirt!
