It’s no secret that scent plays a powerful role in emotion, and lighting up the right candle can boost a particular mood. That’s partly why candles have become so popular today. Of course a pretty candle helps as decor, but more than anything, it can shift your energy. Certain smells trigger and release stored emotions, which can drastically alter the situation at hand. With that in mind, I wanted to share 8 different candle scents that can evoke a certain mood.

Powerfully soothing botanicals of lavender and chamomile are notoriously known to promote relaxation, alleviate tension, and aid with sleep. Since both scents have the ability to help you sleep better, you’ll wind up waking up happier too.

To destress…

It’s no surprise that pine is one of those scents known to alleviate stress – it’s associated with the holidays and evokes cheerfulness. One Japanese study showed that participants who went on a walk through pine forests reported significantly lower depression, anxiety, and stress levels after indulging in the scent.

For productivity…

Unlike other aromatherapy scents that either relax you, aid in sleep, or are very energizing, the scent of bamboo helps sharpen your mental focus. Its ability to improve focus makes it a great option to light when you’re studying or need to complete an important assignment.

For joy…

I think it’s safe to say that joyfulness is at an all-time low. Fortunately, there are tons of essential oils that promote positive energy and happiness. Among them is one of my favorites, vanilla! Extensive research has found that taking a whiff of vanilla bean elevates feelings of joy and relaxation. Others include jasmine, bergamot, and fresh flowers.

I think we all know that citrus scents have the power to promote energy. There’s something vivacious and bright about it that not only eases nausea and vomiting, but awakens any space.

To relax…

Sandalwood often tops the list of oils used in aromatherapy to relieve anxiety, stress and depression. I personally love sandalwood because of its earthy, musky scent. It’s not too feminine yet feels really sophisticated, making makes a nice change from your basic floral scents. I think it’s also important to note that sandalwood oil has been used medicinally given its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

To boost romance…

I can never pass up a good rose-scented candle. The scent of roses has been long known to induce feelings of romance and adventure. Diptyque reigns supreme when it comes to rose scents. I especially love this Baies candle. Fig is another great source and inspiration for love.

For nostalgia…

I sometimes get in these moods that really set me back into the past. One of the candle scents that I love lighting up when I feel this way is palo santo because of its energy cleansing ability. It has a really unique smell that helps shift energy away from unproductive attachments to thoughts and emotions. It’s all-around cathartic and nostalgic.
