Covid-19: 98 patients admitted to ICU

Kenya continues to witness an increase in the number of people with Covid-19 after the latest positivity rate of 13.7 per cent where 870 people have tested positive out of a sample size of 6,309.

98 patients are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the highest number of patients in the ICU recorded in Kenya since the onset of the pandemic.

Twenty-five, which is one in every four people admitted in ICU are on ventilatory support. 60 others are on oxygen and thirteen are under observation.

650 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, the highest number this year. Some 1,929 other patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

Another 25 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 23 of them in the general wards and two in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

117 patients have recovered, 42 from the Home-Based and Isolation Care while 44 are from various health facilities. Total recoveries now stand at 88,326.

President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday extended the nationwide night curfew for 60 days among other measures aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19.

With the looming third wave leading to a surge in fresh cases and thinning Intensive Care Units (ICU) beds, President Uhuru said civic duty and personal responsibility were key in emerging from the pandemic.

The country’s caseload now stands at 112,805 out of 1,364,699 tests so far conducted since March last year when the first case was reported.

Seven patients have succumbed to the disease pushing the cumulative fatalities to 1,908.
