Police officers on Sunday lobbed tear gas outside the AIPCA Kenol Church where Deputy President William Ruto was attending a harambee.
Chaos had preceded the second-in-command’s arrival at the church event, with rival youth groups clashing in Kenol town.
The DP who is being hosted by Kandara MP Alice Wahome arrived at around 10 am when calm had been restored; the church service began shortly after.
He was accompanied by among others Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, and Nyandarua Woman Representative.
On Sunday morning, transport on the busy Kenol-Murang’a road was paralyzed for several hours by rival youth groups.
Videos from the incident showed tires smouldering on the road, motorists cowering from a volley of stones and activities at the Kenol church thrown into sudden disarray.
The round of chaos left one person dead and several others nursing serious injuries.
One woman who was cornered by angry residents and nearly lynched said they had been paid Ksh.1000 with instructions to picket at DP Ruto’s meeting.
So they were to be paid 1000 bob by an elected leader to stop the Deputy President from accessing the church in muranga #WajingaNyinyi pic.twitter.com/MCuYs1oucQ
