Police officers dressed as religious women in long religious garbs lured two armed thugs on Tuesday morning before shooting them dead at Stage ya Maji in Dandora.
The use of disguise is one of the new tactics that officers in Eastlands are now employing to deal with the upsurge of violent crimes in the city.
The two thugs, according to the police, were part of a five-member gang that has been preying on worshipers attending church services at night.
Tuesday’s operation started when the thugs confronted the disguised officers thinking that they were women walking from church and ordered them to stop.
They then started threatening them with guns and asked them to part with valuables in their possession.
‘SHOT THEM’
“It is then that they realized that they had been trapped and two of them drew pistols and fired at the officers who retaliated and shot them dead,” said Kamukunji police commander Adamson Bungei.
The officers used the disguise after several complaints were made that thugs are taking advantage of the Easter holiday to steal from locals.
Thugs in Dandora are said to be so informed about police operations, they can even positively indentify an undercover cop.
“Police severally tried to get hold of them but that did not work, it is then that they improvised the trick,” he said.
A similar trick was used to lure thugs following complaints of an upsurge in crime in the Ngong forest where women and ladies were raped.
Within a week of posing as women, the officers had completely eradicated the gang.
