Good days at the office
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Gavin Hunt and Kaizer Chiefs this season, as their task was made all the more difficult by the club’s Fifa transfer ban, while the four-time PSL league winning coach also faced injuries, suspensions and obvious individual errors from his players.
Indeed, there were some memorable games during Hunt’s tenure, and ahead of the Caf Champions League final, Goal remember five of the best perfromances from the 2020/21 season.
1. 13 January, 2021 Kings Park Stadium: AmaZulu 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs
After what had been a very disappointing first three months of the season for the Glamour Boys, they needed to start the new year on the front foot. Against an on-form Usuthu that was always going to be a big task, but Chiefs rose to the occasion with a fighting performance and secured the win thanks to Samir Nurkovic’s 11th-minute goal.
2. 29 November, 2020 – Omnisport de Limbe: PWD Bamenda 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs
It was an edgy win, but what mattered most was the result, and what was especially impressive is that it came away from home.
Chiefs showed great character to grind out the win and had to hang in until the 83rd minute before securing victory thanks to an Erick Mathoho goal. After a 0-0 home draw in the first leg, this win was particularly outstanding and enabled the Soweto side to book their spot in the first round proper.
Since then they haven’t looked back and are now just two matches from the final.
3. 21 March, 2021 FNB Stadium: Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Orlando Pirates
The Glamour Boys had already lost to their most bitter rivals three times in the season – once in the league and twice in the MTN8.
A fourth straight defeat would have been unthinkable, and Chiefs showed great tenacity on the day to win the game, thanks to Nurkovic’s 55th-minute winner.
4. 15 May, 2021 – FNB Stadium: Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 Simba SC
This was one of Amakhosi’s most emphatic displays of the season and, from start to finish they were on top.
With so much on the line – this was a Caf Champions League quarter-final first leg game,
Chiefs could have bottled it, but instead, the opposite was the case; Nurkovic netted a brace, with Leonardo Castro and Erick Mathoho also on target.
5. 2 June, 2021 – FNB Stadium: Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 Golden Arrows
It wasn’t just the win, it was the fact that Amakhosi beat one of the league’s best teams, and it was because the victory over Arrows opened up their chances of securing a top eight finish, which they ultimately secured.
That aside, it was the spirit and bravery which Chiefs showed to win the game which was impressive, as was Lebogang Manyama’s sparkling hat-trick.
