Six months clean: Alex Mwakideu opens up on struggle with alcoholism

Radio presenter Alex Mwakideu is six months sober.

Opening up during an interview on Full circle with Joyce, Mwakideu explained that he quit alcohol in honour of his mother’s memory following her passing in 2019.

Mwakideu narrated that he had prior not taken heed to her numerous pleas and interventions for him to quit and admitted that the decision has not been easy but worthwhile.

He narrated.

The Milele FM radio host added that the luxury was not cheap either as he fed his pastime with exotic, over the top purchases.

A lifestyle not appreciated by her family who opined that he was wasting away.

Alikuwa ananitolea hii mfano kila siku nasema siku moja nitawacha,” he went on.

According to the media personality, it was after his mother’s demise that he saw the light, “ Mamangu pia alikuwa ananiambia wacha tu pombe, mimi sipendei tu unavyokunywa pombe. Mimi sipendi ukinywa pombe. Napenda kila kitu unachofanya. Napenda unavyolinda familia yako, unavyojali watu wako, pombe wacha tu. Haijawahi kusaidia mtu hata Mmoja.”

Sasa hivi naelekea mwezi wa Sita” said Mwakideu.

During the interview, he also touched on the difficult time his family went through after the death of their sister Emmy who succumbed to cancer and died shortly after their mother.

“Ilikuwa wakati mgumu kwa familia yetu mzima, si kwangu peke yangu. Ilikuwa wakati mgumu saanaa,” he said.

Birthday party

News had it that for his 40th birthday celebration, the celebrated presenter would throw a lavish bash and charge Sh40,000 as entrance free.

“My brother Alex Mwakideu turns forty this Friday! Are you invited? 4 pm to 4 am, forty friends, fourth-floor club, 40k entry! This Friday it will be chaos! Happy birthday bro in advance!” wrote his co-host Jalang’o.

Mwakideu, however, explained that it was only a mere joke that his close friends came up with and that he would never host such a party.

“Si kweli. Mimi sikupost ile poster. Ni marafiki zangu wa karibu. Waliamua, wakaanza na wakapost na wakaenda na iyo story kabisa. Mimi nilikuwa Amboseli na familia yangu yote kwenda kusherehekea birthday ya miaka arobaini kule msituni.

“Tukakaa kule mpaka tukamaliza wikendi tukarudi nyumbani. Mimi ni mtu wa familia sana. Sasa ile ilikuwa tu inaendelea, naiona mtandaoni mimi mpaka watu wanaandika, mablogger nini.
