The Boston Red Sox have recalled catcher Sandy Leon and designated catcher Blake Swihart for assignment.
Leon, who was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket before the season began, may start Tuesday night against the Yankees in New York with Chris Sale on the mound.
The Red Sox are off to a 6-11 start in defense of their World Series title, and their starters have the worst ERA in baseball at 7.18.
Leon is loved by the pitchers for his game management, his handling of the staff and his ability to frame pitches.
In 2018, León appeared in a career-high 89 games for Boston and led the majors with a 3.29 catcher’s ERA. He also caught nine shutouts, and the Red Sox posted a 55-23 record in his starts behind the plate.
Christian Vazquez has been the team’s primary starting catcher.
