It was on a Sunday afternoon at Ushindi Pefa Church and 14-year-old Joy Malika (not her real name) had just left the church alongside her mother and younger siblings.

Shortly after everyone had left, the pastor, Samuel Kazungu, who is in his late thirties, stayed behind playing the keyboard and the tunes touched Malika right from her home, which is just meters away from the church.

This made her to go to the church alongside her younger siblings and they sat just a few steps away from the pastor, watching him as they mumbled to the keyboard tunes.

Little did she know that the tunes would lure her to something sinister.

The pastor called her aside as her siblings played around the church, gave her a note to read and asked her to give a response later.

In the note, the pastor said he wanted to start a relationship her.

The young girl sunk into thoughts, thoughts she did not share with anyone.

The man of cloth to started making frequent visits to their home. Her mother was unaware of the sinister plan that brought the servant of God to her house.

The man even started visiting at night, and on one particular visit, he asked to share a sermon with the girl. Her mother left them alone and went to bed, telling her daughter to lock the door when the pastor left.

The pastor then asked the girl to go with him to the church.

But it turned out that this was the night he was to fulfil his evil plan.

The pastor defiled the girl right on the floor of the church then gave her Sh200 and later escorted her home.

The following day they met at the local shopping centre and the pastor asked Malika to once again meet him in the church by nightfall. Again, he defiled her and gave her Sh300.

The girl told the Hola magistrate’s court that this happened several other times until it became a routine.

They would meet in the church many and the pastor would expose her to explicit pornographic content and urged her to try out what she saw.

“He would show me pornographic videos and pictures after which he would defile me,” she told the court.

She told Resident Magistrate Benard Kabanga that as this happened, the pastor gave her pills to swallow in order to prevent a pregnancy.

But seven months later, she got pregnant.

“I went and told the pastor that I had missed my monthly periods that November and he gave me emergency pills which I took,” she narrated.

This news did not intimidate the pastor who continued defiling Malika on and on.

All this while, Malika’s mother had not noticed any changes on her, nor had she sensed anything unusual. But somebody else had noticed early changes on Malika.

Malika’s mother told the court that a friend hinted to her that the daughter could be pregnant.

“I was shocked. I did not believe it and immediately rushed home where I found my daughter and asked her about it and she confided to me,” the mother said.

She said they headed straight to the pastor’s house to confront him but the man of God denied responsibility.

Malika insisted that the pastor was responsible for her pregnancy and they proceeded to record a statement with the Hola police who apprehended the pastor.

Magistrate Kabanga scheduled the hearing to continue on May 15, 2019 when more witnesses, the investigating officer and the accused will give their side of the story.
