Tenants ignore orders to vacate Ruaka apartment ruined by collapsed wall – Nairobi News

A section of tenants at Grafion Apartments in Ruaka have ignored orders to vacate the building after a section of the car park collapsed due to ongoing excavation on an adjacent plot

The vacation orders were issued by the National Construction Authority (NCA) after a site visit.

The NCA ordered an investigation to ascertain the safety of the building, which is supported by pillars, following the incident.

Residents who spoke to Nairobi News say the notice was short because some of them had already paid their monthly rent.

“Moving out means paying another rent and you know how moving is expensive. We need time to figure things out before moving. I can’t just move and I don’t have extra money somewhere that I can use to pay the rent,” said one of the tenant.

National Building Inspectorate Moses Nyakiongora said the collapsed perimeter wall at Grafion Apartment was as a result of unprofessional engineering in the excavation on the adjacent plot.

No casualties were reported but five vehicles were damaged.
