Bruce informs Arsenal of Willock transfer plan and rules out Newcastle exit for Saint-Maximin
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce says a permanent deal for Joe Willock will be discussed this summer, while suitors of Allan Saint-Maximin have been warned that the winger is not for sale.
The Magpies are in a position where they can start planning for next season after hitting form at the right time and dragging themselves clear of the relegation zone.
Willock, who has hit five goals through 11 appearances during a productive loan spell at St James’ Park, is among those to have sparked a resurgence and Bruce is eager to see the 21-year-old midfielder remain on Tyneside.
Asked about Newcastle’s plans for Arsenal-owned Willock, Bruce told talkSPORT: “All of us would love to [make it permanent].
“He’s 21, a midfield player and he’s got five goals since the turn of the year, so of course we want him – but we have to respect that he’s Arsenal’s player.
“I’m sure Arsenal will have big discussions this summer, but if there’s a possibility that we can bring him back we’d love to do it.”
What about Saint-Maximin?
While Newcastle are eager to see Willock move through arrivals this summer, efforts are being made to ensure that key men do not head for the departure lounge.
French winger Saint-Maximin is attracting plenty of interest, with his direct running and quick feet earning plenty of praise, but the 24-year-old is considered to be a key part of long-term planning at St James’ Park.
Bruce added on a prized asset: “I said when we signed him he was going to be someone who gets you off the edge of your seat and how often do you feel like that about an individual player?
“He has wonderful natural ability and it wouldn’t surprise me if other teams are looking because his ability is there for everybody to see.
“He is right. Nobody wants Newcastle to be in a relegation fight.
“He is a very gifted individual and young, of course. The last thing we want to be doing is selling our better players that is for sure.”
Will Bruce be staying put?
Bruce is hoping to work with Willock and Saint-Maximin in 2021-22, but questions have been asked of his ongoing presence in the Newcastle dugout.
He has a contract through to the end of next season, but discussions will be held this summer about whether he remains the right man to guide the Magpies forward.
The 60-year-old said of his own future: “It is for others to decide.
“Most clubs will have big discussions and review the season. I am a football person and it is still too early to retire yet. But those conversations will happen over the next couple of weeks, I am sure.”

Bruce has told talkSPORT of an on-loan midfielder: “I’m sure Arsenal will have big discussions this summer, but if there’s a possibility that we can bring him back we’d love to do it.”
Leeds made aware of Lang’s asking price
Leeds will need to stump up around €25 million (£22m/$30m) if they want to lure Noa Lang away from Club Brugge, claims GVA.
The 21-year-old winger is currently on loan in Belgium, but that deal will be made permanent and another big-money bid would be required in order to take him elsewhere.

Martinez ‘open to all directions’ when he leaves Bayern
Javi Martinez has insisted that he will be “open to all directions” after his Bayern Munich departure at the end of the season.
Martinez will officially leave Allianz Arena when his contract expires in June, having spent the last nine years of his career with the German champions.
The 32-year-old has won all the top honours in the game during his time with Bayern, but has yet to decide on his next move, with his focus currently locked on wrapping up the 2020-21 campaign in strong fashion.
What’s been said?
“I’m open to all directions and am looking for the best option for myself,” Martinez told Kicker of his future plans. “I don’t know yet, I will make this decision at home in Ayegui this summer.
“First I will concentrate on the last two games and my farewell.”
Asked how long he wants to continue playing at the highest level, the Spaniard added: “My legs decide. One year, three, 10? Take a look. But I also want to be physically well after my career is over.”
Martinez’s career at Bayern
Martinez became the most expensive signing in Bayern’s history when he joined from Athletic Club for €40 million (£35m/$49m) back in 2012.
The World Cup winner has since racked up 266 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga giants, while also contributing 14 goals and 11 assists.
Martinez has picked up 22 trophies in total with Bayern, including nine league titles and two Champions League crowns.
Who else is leaving Bayern this summer?
Martinez is not the only influential figure set to walk through the Allianz Arena exits this summer, with Bayern having also decided against handing veteran defender Jerome Boateng a contract extension.
David Alaba will also be departing as he seeks to undertake a new challenge away from Germany, while head coach Hansi Flick is due to be replaced by RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.
Romagnoli eager to stay at Milan
Alessio Romagnoli is eager to stay at Milan beyond the end of the season – as Calcio Mercato reports.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from San Siro after falling down the squad pecking order, but he wants to remain in the Italian capital and fight for his place.
Romagnoli’s current contract expires in 2022, and Milan are happy to keep the club captain for the time being.

Milan want Tomori on permanent deal – Pioli
Stefano Pioli has confirmed AC Milan want to sign Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on a permanent deal.
Tomori moved to Milan on loan in January after falling down the squad pecking order at Stamford Bridge, and has since rediscovered his best form at San Siro.
The 23-year-old played a starring role once again as the Rossoneri beat arch-rivals Juventus 3-0 in Serie A on Sunday, with Pioli revealing after the game that the club intends to exercise their £26 million ($37m) purchase option on the centre-back.
What’s been said?
“We want to buy Tomori on a permanent deal from Chelsea,” the Milan boss told reporters. “Our intention is clear and also Fikayo’s decision (staying at Milan). We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”
Tomori’s record at Milan
Tomori’s latest Serie A outing marked his 19th appearance across all competitions for Milan, who are now on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The England international opened his scoring account for the Italian giants against Juventus, nodding a powerful header past opposition goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny late on to cap a superb display which also saw him keep five-time Balon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo quiet.
What has Tomori said about his future?
Tomori could still return to Chelsea and fight for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s set-up in the summer, with his current contract at the Bridge not due to expire until 2024. However, the Blues loanee gave little away when asked if he would like to extend his stay at Milan in March.
“I’m not really focused too much on what can happen in the future, it’s just more about me playing well for the team and doing what I can for myself right now and helping the team as much as possible,” he said. “Then what happens in the future will happen.”

Pirlo won’t resign
Andrea Pirlo has said he has no intention of stepping down as the manager of Juventus even as their slump could lead to them missing Champions League qualification.
The first-year manager has been under intense pressure lately with his men winning just two of their past five matches and falling 3-0 to AC Milan on Sunday.
Pirlo insists he won’t resign after AC Milan hammer Juventus
Andrea Pirlo says that he will not stand down from his role as Juventus head coach despite another major setback against AC Milan on Sunday.
Rookie boss Pirlo watched from the sidelines as the Bianconeri were dismantled 3-0 at home by their rivals.
The heavy loss came just a week after Juventus had officially relinquished the Serie A crown for the first time after nine successive titles.
What was said?
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Pirlo said: “Resign? No, I won’t step aside. I took this role with a great deal of enthusiasm amid certain difficulties. I am at the disposal of the club, there are still three games to go, so I will continue doing my work as long as I am allowed to.
“I had a different project in my mind and thought I would have a different group at my disposal. I had been working on some concepts, but then I had to make changes in order to suit their characteristics and had to adapt.
“It’s not that this team is resistant to change, but if you have some things in your mind and they become more difficult with certain players. If I cannot get the best out of these players, that is my fault and I certainly need to do better.
“If something didn’t go right, I take responsibility. This squad is made up of great players, clearly something did not work.”
The bigger picture
Juventus are now in grave danger of missing out on the Champions League entirely next season. With three matches of the season remaining, they are fifth in the league, three points behind both Atalanta and Milan, as well as one back of Napoli.
And Juventus face a testing schedule. On Wednesday, they travel to eighth-placed Sassuolo before hosting Inter, their fiercest rivals and this season’s Serie A champions, next Saturday. The Coppa Italia final against Atalanta follows on May 19 before a final trip to mid-table Bologna.
With Juve in financial difficulties, they can barely afford to miss out on the money-spinning Champions League, making the next two weeks absolutely vital to their hopes in the years ahead.

Julian Draxler has signed a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain, reports L’Equipe, with the attacking midfielder’s new deal lasting for three years.
The reported deal comes shortly after Neymar’s announced extension, making it an important week for the future of PSG’s lineup. Kylian Mbappe, however, remains without a fresh contract.
