The Brewers resumed their top-flight action with a frustrating result against the hard-fighting Bankers at Ruaraka Grounds
Tusker FC suffered a setback in their FKF Premier League title race after a 0-0 draw against KCB in a match at Ruaraka Grounds on Saturday.
The Brewers came into their first match after the resumption of football with the aim of picking up maximum points so as to stretch their lead at the summit of the 18-team table but they could not break down a resilient KCB side, even after they were reduced to ten men.
Tusker coach Robert Matano opted to hand Sammy Meja his first start for the Brewers while Rogders Aloro was paired in the defence alongside Eugine Asike, with James Macharia leading the attacking line.
Playing in the muddy pitch after the heavy rains which pounded Nairobi City and its environs on Friday night, Tusker mastered the conditions with passing football and their best chance in the half came in the 20th minute when captain Hashim Sempala exchanged passes with Apollo Otieno but his final shot went inches wide.
The Brewers continued to knock at the door of the Bankers and in the 40th minute Macharia dribbled past KCB defenders Baraka Edage and Harun Thomas, but once again his final effort was easy for goalkeeper Michael Wanjala to deal with.
The two teams went into the half-time break tied at 0-0 and after the resumption, KCB had good chance to break the deadlock but Henry Onyango saw his free header saved by Emery Mvuyekure.
Matano then moved to make a double change for Tusker in the 65th minute as Macharia came off for Luke Namanda while Henry Onyango came in for Otieno.
Immediately after the change, Tusker nearly broke the deadlock as Aloro curled in a beautiful free-kick which keeper Wanjala pushed out for a fruitless corner-kick.
KCB were then reduced to ten men after Curtis Wekesa was sent off for a bad tackle but despite the numerical advantage, Tusker could not snatch a win as the two sides settled for a draw.
The Brewers will remain at the top with 37 points from 17 matches while Kariobangi Sharks, who beat visiting Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 on Friday, will remain second with 31 points, the same as third-placed KCB.
