After reading several cloud computing trends for 2020, there is one thing that comes to my mind again and again – Hybrid Cloud. Even as per an article titled 8 technologies that will disrupt business in 2020, there is an increasing number of companies shift from kicking the tires on the use of cloud and big data technologies to implementing enterprise deployments, with many taking a hybrid approach.
For those who are hearing the term for the first time, it is a mix of on-premises, private and public cloud services. Hybrid Cloud enables greater operational flexibility and gives more data deployment options. Hybrid Cloud Storage allows enterprises to move workloads between on-premises or private cloud and host what they are comfortable sharing publicly on public cloud platform. In a hybrid cloud environment, it is possible for the private cloud to be on-premises or even a virtual private cloud that is located outside the enterprise data center.
While most Enterprises are already using Public Cloud, they are also starting to experiment with private cloud to enable faster time-to-market and get more efficient. There are many enterprises that are using Software as a Services for email and CRM.
Enterprises are growing their IT spend for public cloud and evaluating a suitable cloud computing solution for various applications. There clearly are some obvious benefits of Hybrid Cloud Computing. For example, the operational flexibility it enables helps run mission critical application on private cloud, dev/ test on public cloud. It also helps enterprises to become scalable and run peak workloads on public cloud.
As per an article published in Enterprise Innovation titled 2018: The rise of AI, hybrid cloud and digital human rights issues, the ability for enterprises to run applications in different infrastructures – public and private clouds and on premise with common orchestration and management tools – is enticing. Multi-cloud, with different workloads running in different clouds managed separately, will become the dominant mode in 2018, while true hybrid clouds will start to emerge.
There are challenges with Hybrid Cloud Computing
One of the most important requirements that hybrid cloud computing must fulfill is that of seamless operations across multiple platforms, hypervisors and cloud APIs or application programming interfaces. In a perfect scenario, users should be able to either create applications or move applications between different cloud environments without making major changes like networking, security or operational processes. Enterprises are still struggling with issues related to multiple APIs, tools, policies, processes, interoperability and mobility when it comes to hybrid cloud.
Benefits of Hybrid Approach
Hybrid Cloud is hugely beneficial if long-term storage is required for storage of legacy information or backup of data to be stored for a long-term.
Public Cloud can be leveraged for disaster recovery instead of maintaining workloads in a physical location.
Rapid expansion of web and applications servers is possible during peak season (for example holiday season) with the need to procure new hardware and the requirement can be scaled down as easily.
It enables the development team to have a whole infrastructure ready with ease without taking months to build a solution or procure or configure.
Hybrid Cloud will propel digital business
We understand that hybrid cloud environment enables a modernized infrastructure with two or more delivery models. It entails a traditional data center, private cloud, public cloud, and a managed private cloud with service provisioning and coordinated management.
Hybrid Cloud can transform traditional IT into a service model with enhanced flexibility, increased speed to market and decreased operational tasks. It can do so with automated administrative tasks, self-service infrastructure access and applications and optimal utilization of IT resources. With the Hybrid cloud models, enterprises can spend less on operational upkeep and divert funds to digital reinvention. There are many technology heads who believe that Hybrid can streamline operations and gives them the resources for initiatives that help to innovate, acquire new clients, work towards improved customer experience, enhance customer engagement and loyalty.
There is no doubt that hybrid cloud allows more scalability, portability and flexibility
