31 prisoners have tested positive for the new coronavirus at the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Prison, the Kenya Prisons Service commissioner general Wycliffe Ogallo said on Sunday.
The 31 cases were part of 59 samples taken from remandees and prisoners on Thursday, May 28 in the ongoing targetted mass testing.
On Saturday, the Nairobi County Emergency Response team evacuated the patients who are now receiving treatment in various treatment centres across the city.
“From the results received on Saturday, 31 samples had tested positive for coronavirus after which the Nairobi County Emergency Response Team promptly moved in and evacuated the patients to various treatment centers for case management,” Kenya Prisons Service said in a statement.
At the same time, the Kenya Prisons Service confirmed that all the convicts and remandees currently in custody were safe.
As of Saturday, Kenya had confirmed 1888 cases of the novel coronavirus after reporting 143 new cases between Friday and Saturday.
The new cases consist of 110 male and 33 female and range between 1 month and 88 years in terms of age.
