If there’s anything that’s consistent about my wardrobe, it’s probably the union of style and functionality, especially in the winter. Fortunately, you don’t have to choose just one as long as you have the right pieces in your wardrobe (combined with some creative fashion tricks). Typically, I find that styling makes a bigger impact than the pieces themselves. That’s why I wanted to share some of my go-to winter fashion hacks that will help you dress for the frigid upcoming months.
Hack: How to take off a turtleneck top without getting makeup everywhere
Winter and turtleneck tops go together like PB&J, but makeup and turtlenecks are your wardrobe’s worst nightmare. For years I wondered, “Do you slip into a turtleneck sweater before or after makeup? And how do you get it off without smearing makeup everywhere?” Well, I’ve got one of the best winter fashion hacks to help you do that. Simply tie a silky scarf (doesn’t have to be real silk or satin) around your neck (or over your head) and the top will glide right over. It works like a charm every time – and the makeup stays put!
Hack: How to tuck in a sweater without the bulk
I always get asked about how I can tuck in my chunky sweaters without them bunching up.
So, there are two things you can do:
1) Just tuck in the ends and let the rest hang over. This works best if you’re wearing loose trousers or denim.
2) With more form fitting pieces like a high-waisted skirt or leggings, tie a string around your waist where you want the “tucked-in” look to appear. Then, pull out the sweater to cover the string and fluff as needed. If it’s a longer sweater, you can also tuck the ends under your bra!
Hack: How to remove scratches on patent leather
Patent leather has been trending for the past two years. If you own anything patent or vinyl looking, you know how easily the material can scratch, especially if it’s a pair of shoes or handbag. To remove scuffs, rub a small amount of vaseline on the area and watch it disappear like magic.
Hack: Fake a hem, prevent slippage and more
Fashion tape is a multi-purpose product that will get your wardrobe far. You can also achieve multiple winter fashion hacks with it. Now, what are some of the ways I like to use it? If I haven’t had time to go to a tailor – or receive something from a brand that’s too long, I use fashion tape to take up the length. Fashion tape is also great for holding “no-show” socks in place and keeping necklines from getting funky.
Hack: How to make suede look brand new
I love my suede shoes, but they can be pretty high-maintenance. There have been times I even forgot to treat them.
If you can relate, then I think you’ll be surprised at how easy it can be to revive them. Take a shoe brush (or even an old tooth brush) and brush out the areas that have started to fall flat or matte. Your shoes will look brand new again!
