Layering season is just around the corner! Right before the actual inception of fall, I like to go through my wardrobe and do an inventory check of all the essentials I will need for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Outerwear is the obvious must have category to get in check as you will need something to protect you from the colder weather. Trendy styles aside, I always ensure I have a good collection of timeless outerwear that I can mix-and-match with all my outfits. Over the years, I narrowed down this holy grail coat collection to about 7 pieces (adjustments allowed pertaining to your own sense of style). Since autumn is practically here, I wanted to go over the fall and winter coats that I think every wardrobe should include. Discover below!
The outerwear style that will always be relevant is undeniably the trench coat. It truly is a timeless layering device that can either be dressed up or down. Not only is it stylish, but it also is an incredibly practical piece that will protect you from the environmental elements like rain and wind.
In addition to the trench, the other longline essential coat style I highly recommend is the duster coat. There are a few different variations of the duster coat you can add to your collection. For instance, a wool or quilted fabrication or belted versus a non-belted style. In terms of color, you can never go wrong with either grey, camel or black.
Leather or Suede
Another iconic coat is the leather (or suede) jacket. For this piece, I highly recommend sticking to neutrals here too as a black or a tan is easier to maximize. A leather or suede moto jacket can easily layer over anything from a t-shirt and jeans to a dress – possibilities are endless!
One of the more casual fall and winter coats is the classic denim jacket. It provides that effortlessly chic aesthetic that does not require much thought, making it a great option to grab on-the-go. Again, this is another versatile coat that you could honestly wear any time of the year. Personally, I love a good oversized version as it makes layering a piece of cake.
A jacket I continually find myself gravitating towards time and time again is the blazer. Out of all the listed essential outerwear options in this blog, the blazer is definitely the one that I have the most versions of. No matter who you are, everyone needs that basic black blazer you could wear to the office. But from there, do not be afraid to test the boundaries and try out different styles! A printed blazer or a statement color is a nice way to spice up your outerwear collection.
If you live in a colder climate, a puffer coat is more than a fashion choice – it is a necessity to brave the drops in temperatures. Obviously, the plus side to a high-quality puffer jacket is the warmth and insulation! These days, this is one of the fall and winter coats you can wear that’s actually trendy and you will find it in differing lengths and styles.
Faux-Fur or Sherpa
I also love a good textured piece to add dimension and interest to my looks. An easy way to tackle this is via a cozy jacket. A faux-fur jacket or a sherpa shacket will instantly elevate the most basic of looks. I love having a textured jacket or two up my sleeve for fall and winter. It is like wearing a socially acceptable, comfy blanket outside of the house!
Without a doubt, these are the essential fall and winter coats to keep on rotation. There are a variety of styles and looks above, so if you have most of these covered, you’ll have a decent mix of styles for every look. Let me know which fall and winter coats made it to your essentials list!
